ベースバンジョーと呼ばれる楽器は複数ある。

最初に生産されたのは、5弦バンジョーや4弦バンジョーを1オクターブ下にチューニングしたもの。
そして、チェロまたはマンドロンチェロと同じ範囲で太い弦から C,G,D,A（5度チューニング）にしたもの。
さらに、イラストのように太い弦から E,A,D,G（4度チューニング）にし、コントラバスと同様のアップライト・バージョンが作られた。
指板にフレットがあるもの、フレットが無いものが存在する。
と、いうか、個人がハンドメイドで作ったりしている（太鼓を本体にしたりして）ので、カタチは様々だ。
